Last weekend, Bleu Eyed View had the privilege of participating in the ARTHAUS 22nd Chalk Art Competition! This event was located in Port Orange,FL during Port Orange Family Days. Due to Covid-19, last year this annual event was canceled which made this event feel even more spectacular! Everyone was ready to get back out into the community and celebrate!
Family Days features parades, food trucks, carnival rides, vendors & of course the chalk competition. Thirteen years ago was the first time I ever participated in the Family Days event. The JROTC program that I was a part of got to walk in the parade! Saturday morning came, the whole platoon lined up looking fancy in our pressed uniforms and polished shoes. It was a great day marching side by side with all my fellow cadets.
After we marched our way around the pond, we had a few hours to go explore. I can remember the stroll by the city center where the chalk event took place. I was mind blown by the talent of these artists. Seeing all the bright neon colors and wild designs in real time. All I kept thinking was these people were so brave to put their work out for everyone to see, that it was something I’d never be able to do. Especially not live!
Being part of this exact chalk event, one I remember from high school, has reminded me that I am capable of growth. Not only artistically but mentally. In life when we’re faced with challenges, we often let our minds talk us into throwing in the towel before even trying. I was intimidated by the thought of random strangers judging my work, of judging me. My mind literally put up a safety wall. Just don’t compete. Don’t put yourself out there. You can’t do
Thirteen years later I made a decision to show up for myself & Bleu Eyed View. I had a Chalk-tastic weekend! I worked among many talented artists! We hit that same pavement 9am Saturday, and by 1pm Sunday everyone delivered complete masterpieces! Judgement time did in fact come.. I’m proud to say we gave it our all and took home the “Best Family Theme” Award!! Also secured our spot to draw at One Daytona’s chalk event in November! My mind was shocked the moment I heard the announcer call my name. Straight shook! I achieved what I thought was unreachable. I’m so glad I stood up against myself; for myself. Here’s to thirteen years
P.S If you live locally and didn’t get a chance to check out the beautiful work, be sure to take a stroll around the Port Orange City Center! Thanks to everyone who came out to show their love & support to the art community! Big shout out to my shading sidekick Amber Hancock! Wouldn’t have turned out without you!
